2019 IBSA World and 1st African Powerlifting & Bench Press Championships a great success

The IBSA Powerlifting Committee is delighted to report on the success of the 2019 IBSA World Powerlifting & Bench Press Championships and first ever IBSA African Powerlifting & Bench Press Championships in Giza, Egypt, at the end of November.

The championships took place from November 15th to 22nd and brought together a total of 75 athletes from ten countries – Japan, India, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Czech Republic, Egypt, Libya, Georgia and Venezuela.

Competition began after a spectacular opening ceremony in the ballroom at the Cataracts Pyramid Resort Hotel, including speeches by the President of the Egyptian NPC, a representative of the Ministry for Sports, Dr Ahmed Owin, President of the Egyptian Blind Sports Federation and Nezam Dodel, Chair of the IBSA Powerlifting Committee.

The women’s events, featuring 27 athletes, took place on November 18th, with individual competitions and team events.

1 – Ukraine 69 points
2 – Russia 66 points
3 – Egypt 50 points

Powerlifting team results

The men’s events, in which 48 athletes competed, were held on November 19th and 20th.

In addition to the World Championships, Giza was also the host of the very first African Championships. Results from the African team events are as follows:

The competitions took place following sight classification carried out by two panels of IBSA classifiers and three important seminars for the future of the sport organised by the committee:

1 – IBSA Powerlifting coaching seminar conducted by Nezam Dodel, chair of the committee.

2 – IBSA Powerlifting referees seminar conducted by Dr.Hossein Farzanefard.

3 – Seminar on the IBSA Powerlifting nomination procedures and rules for participating in championships, conducted by Sergio Centeno.

The Egyptian Anti-doping Agency sent officials to the championships to test 10 athletes.
At the closing ceremony, the IBSA Powerlifting Chairman thanked all the teams and athletes for competing and Dr. Owin and the Egyptian Blind Sports Federation for staging the highly successful championships.
