Category: Showdown
The third ranking point tournament of 2022 (after Pajulahti and Prague) was held in Vilnius, Lithuania from June 3rd till the 4th.
38 men and 20 women took part in the tournament. Both women and men were awarded the maximum number of ranking points for an international tournament – 400. In the men’s competition, the reigning European champion, Olly Kytöviita, from Finland, took third place. It was his first podium for a long time. In the game for third place, he bested the Italian Marco Carrai by 3-0 (11-1, 11-5, and 11-5). In the meantime, Deniss Ovsjannikovs from Latvia, in his first final appearance, defeated the experienced Kristian Kisiel from Poland. It was his first victory in an international tournament. This time, Deniss’ usual fast-paced game came with high precision and psychological stability. These qualities ensured him a confident result of 3-1 (12-4, 8-12, 11-7, 11-6).
The third place for women was won by the Polish representative, Monika Szwaek, who beat the Italian Sonja Tranchina 3-1 (11-9, 11-5, 7-12, 11-5). Prior to that, Monika defeated the young Estonian Tiia Innos in a five-set battle that was possibly the most exciting of the tournament. The result was 3-2 (4-11, 11-6, 5-11, 15-13, 11-7).
In the final, the unbeatable Hanna Vilmi from Finland was challenged by Antye Samorai from Germany. It must be said that Hannas’ victory came in a difficult fight. Nevertheless, the game was won in three sets: 11-9, 11-6, 12-10.
