Nicaragua and Guatemala take Goalball honors
Date: April 29, 2013
Category: Goalball
The Central America Para Games recently concluded in Costa Rica with Nicaragua and Guatemala winning the mens and womens Goalball tournaments respectively.
Five nations put teams forward in both of these divisions. Along with host nation Costa Rica, national teams from Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras also participated.
After the round robin phase of the womens division, three teams were on equal points; El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. These three teams had all won and lost a match from each other so it was goal difference that decided their final pool rankings. El Salvador claimed top pool honors followed closely by Guatemala while Nicaragua was a lot further behind.
The semi-finals and finals however were not so close. Both El Salvador and Guatemala took their fine form from the round robin and won their semi-finals convincingly. Nicaragua continued to dominate over Honduras and won the bronze medal match with a 10 goal difference. The gold medal match was also won with a large difference but not in the direction that was predicted. Guatemala defeated El Salvador 11-2. Even though Guatemala had defeated El Salvador in the group stage, it was only by 1 point so this result was a big surprise.
In the mens division, the pool stage was a lot clearer cut with the same three nations at the top of the ladder. El Salvador once again topped the group followed by Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Honduras.
Like the womens semi-finals, both of the men semi-finals were also won in convincing fashion with El Salvador and Nicaragua victors. However, unlike the womens finals, the mens finals were a lot closer. Guatemala defeated home nation Costa Rica 5-2 to take the bronze. The gold medal match was once again an upset with Nicaragua peaking at the right time and taking the final over El Salvador 13-8.
