New Goalball Teams Enter European Group A Ranks

After four days of intensive goalball action, the 2016 IBSA Goalball European Championships – Group B are now in the record books, promoting new teams to the Group A ranks. 

In the women's competition, the Great Britain women's team was unstoppable.  Cruising through most of the tournament by ending most of their matches by the mercy rule, they faced Germany in the gold medal match.  Although Germany played well throughout their match, Great Britain managed to extend their undefeated tournament record by posting a 4-1 win and earning the championship crown. 

Greece defeated Netherlands 7-1 to earn the broze medal. 

On the men's side, two teams from battled their way from the A pool to their championship match, Great Britan and Ukraine.  Although the men's team had a remarkable tournament and had great hopes of equalling their women's gold-medal performance, Ukraine, was looking to finish out the tournament with an undefeated record.  Although Great Britain played a spirited match, Ukraine kept the pressure on through the entire match racking up a 14-6 score by the final buzzer.  Both teams are to be commended for their outstanding performances. 

Slovenia, looking to return the to medal podium and to Group A, defeated Israel 7-5.

At tournament's end, women's teams from Great Britain, Germany and Greece have advanced to European Group A.  Joining them are men's teams from Ukraine, Great Britain and Slovenia.
