Category: Goalball
The mens team of Lithuania and the Turkish womens team were both dominant during the Goalball competition at the Pajulahti Games. The games took place in Finland from January 18 to January 20.
Throughout the womens tournament, Turkey had made it clear that they were there to win. This determination never let up and was also taken into the final where they had a comprehensive win over Canada 8-3.
The bronze medal match between Russia and the USA, however, was not so clear cut. Actually, it went down to the wire and was decided on penalties. After regulation time and extra time, the scores were locked at 2-2. The final score was 4-3 in the favour of the Russians.
Host nation Finland went down in the 5th/6th play-off. They lost to Israel 5-2. Israel had a handy lead after the first half. During the second half, they didn’t look like they had any intention of letting Finland back into the game.
In the mens’ competition, Lithuania was back to their winning ways. They didn’t drop a match throughout the whole tournament. In the final, runners-up Sweden were leading 3-1 at the end of the first half. However, Lithuania weren’t going to lose their first match in the final. They fought and came back to win 9-7.
Third place went to the Czech Republic who had a good win over Finland 2 8-5. While 5th place went to a too strong Finland 1 who conquered Russia 12-2.
