Goalball: A moment of truth for Brazil, Canada, and the USA
Date: November 23, 2023
Category: Goalball
There were no surprises in the quarterfinals of the Goalball tournament in the Para PanAmerican Games – Santiago 2023 in terms of results, but the brackets for the semifinals are making the heat of the moment get higher! Both in men’s and women’s competitions.
Starting with the men’s tournament, the semifinal between the USA and Canada can give access to Paris 2024 if Brazil is the other finalist. Brazil is already qualified through the slot of the World Championship (gold medal), which means that even if Brazil becomes the American champion, the continental slot will be given the silver medal in Santiago 2023.
In the women’s fight for Paris 2024, the most relevant semifinal will be between Brazil and Canada. In this case, only the American champion will have a ticket to the next Paralympic Games, but both national teams (Brazil and Canada) are aiming for that goal, and only one can move on to the final.
The women’s Brazilian team got their way to ‘semis’ defeating the Peruvian squad, which had its best performance of all the Games! The five stars of the Andes Mountains managed to score more goals in their last match (5) than in all of the rest of the competition (4).
Even before the finals, Santiago will have all the attention of the Goalball world to follow all the action at the Paralympic Sports Centre in the Estadio Nacional de Chile.
