World Blind Sports Day: Triumph of the Spirit and Strength That Unites Us
Date: April 24, 2025
Category: General
Dear friends,
Today, April 24, we celebrate World Blind Sports Day, an important date in the history of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA). It was on this day, April 24, 1981, that our organization was founded, and since then we have united millions of athletes with visual impairments around the world. This day is not only a celebration but also a moment to especially recognize those who support and inspire our athletes every day: coaches, volunteers, referees, technical staff, and, of course, our member countries who stand side by side with athletes and do everything possible to ensure their success.
We are proud that our athletes are full members of society, and their hard work, determination, and sporting spirit serve as an example for us all. Their achievements are not only athletic victories. Every day they put in tremendous effort not only to develop their sport but also to contribute to the overall welfare of society. Blind and visually impaired sports have become an important tool for social inclusion, and our athletes prove that the impossible is possible. They break stereotypes and inspire success not only in sport but also in life. This is a true triumph of the spirit.
Undoubtedly, coaches, volunteers, referees, and technical staff play an irreplaceable role in this process, providing the conditions for the growth and achievement of our athletes’ goals. But we must also recognize the significant role of our member countries in creating the infrastructure, preparing specialists, and providing the necessary resources for the development of blind and visually impaired sports. These countries stand with athletes, supporting them at every step toward success.
This day is not only a celebration but also a reminder of the importance of collective efforts. We take pride in all participants of this great movement, from athletes and coaches to technical staff and member countries that provide support on the ground. Your dedication, your work, and your efforts are the foundation of all successes and achievements in blind and visually impaired sports.
IBSA is actively working to make April 24 World Blind Sports Day under the auspices of the United Nations. We are confident that this step will help raise awareness about sports for the blind and visually impaired and open new opportunities for further development of our movement.
I congratulate everyone on this significant day and thank you for your efforts and contributions. Together, we continue to build a more inclusive and just sporting world.
With best regards,
Ilgar Rahimov
