Ukraine books final slot at IBSA Partially Sighted Football World Championships

Date: December 13, 2019

Category: Football

Reigning champions Ukraine are sure of a place in tomorrow's final at the IBSA Partially Sighted Football World Championships in Antalya, Turkey, with three teams in the running to face them.

Ukraine is top of the table at the championships after five match days on maximum fifteen points and a goal difference of + 22. In fact the Ukrainians have only conceded one goal in their five fixtures, a remarkable effort in a high-scoring sport.

The other place in tomorrow's final (18:00 local time) will be decided in the last group stage matches later today, with three teams battling it out for the slot: England are best placed on 12 points and a draw against Russia will see them through, although the Russians (9 points) will be looking to win and win big to bag the place in the final. England's goal difference is +11 and Russia's is +4, so only a resounding Russian victory will see them grab second spot in the league standings.

The third team in contention for a berth in the final is the host nation, Turkey, who still have a slim chance of making it through. Sitting fourth on nine points and with a goal difference of zero, Turkey will be hoping for a huge win over fifth-placed Spain and a Russia victory over England. This would result in a three-way tie for second spot on 12 points and it will be down to goal difference to decide who will face Ukraine in the final.

Italy is sixth on three points and will rest today as it has completed its group stage matches, while Japan, which faces Ukraine in today's opening game, is seventh on zero point.
