The semi-final match-ups for the 2019 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball Youth World Championships have been decided following the final day of group play in Penrith on Thursday (8 August).

Headlining the fixtures will be a clash between hosts and defending champions Australia and Great Britain in the girls.

Australia secured their spot with a 2-2 draw against Germany on Thursday to finish third in the group. Great Britain made it through comfortably with only one loss from the preliminaries – an earlier defeat against Brazil – and won their tie with Thailand on Thursday 12-3.

The Brazilian girls head through to the semi-finals unbeaten and will play South Korea for a shot at gold. The match will be a repeat of their final group game which they won with a narrow 4-2 victory, setting up an exciting prospect for the knock-out stages.

Germany secured a fifth place finish in their play-off against Thailand. Sophie Kaudewitz and Jennifer Koch bagged three goals each in their 6-0 win.

In the boys Sweden, Thailand, Brazil and Poland all kept their campaigns alive.

An interesting game is expected when Thailand take on Sweden for a chance at the final. The Swedes are the only side to have beaten their Asian rivals in Penrith.

On Thursday Thailand sealed the fate of the Australian boys, overcoming them 11-1 to finish top of the group.

Sweden’s record of three wins and three loses was completed with a 6-4 defeat against now fellow semi-finallists Brazil.

Concluding the semi-finals are Poland who took on South Korea and beat them 10-1 on Thursday.

Following the conclusion of the group games the fight for fifth place was held in the boys, with South Korea triumphing over Australia 15-5. Cho-Long Kim starred in South Korea’s attack with six goals.

The 2019 IBSA Goalball Youth World Championships will conclude on Friday (9 August). The semi-finals will take place in the morning from 9am local time, followed by the medal matches from 3pm.

Twelve boys and girls teams from eight countries are competing in Penrith.
