Competition is heating-up at the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games as goalball and football-5-a-side teams edged closer to the end of group play in Peru on Monday (26 August).

The US men’s goalball team kept their campaign to qualify for Tokyo 2020 on the rails with another win.

Tyler Merren was their lead scorer with goals in a 12-2 victory over Venezuela, ending the match before half-time despite Venezuela scoring first. Calahan Young also got in on the action with three of his own. Josh Welborn and John Kusku rounded off the scoring with two points each.

“We really did a good job, executing our game and not playing the game that our competition wanted us too,” Kusku said. “It seemed like they were able to handle the fast stuff, so I took a lot off and bounced it through.”

In the women’s the USA’s Marybai Huking got her team off the mark in a 12-2 win over Mexico. Lisa Czechowski was the overall top scorer with five goals, including one penalty.
The Canadian men and women, also in the hunt for Tokyo 2020 qualification, chalked their first victories when they both took on hosts Peru.

Amu Burk starred in her team’s attack with six goals. A second-half surge from Peru with successful attempts from Erika Inuma and Milagros Cortina was short-lived with Canada pulling away courtesy of Burk to end the match 13-3.

In the men’s Bruno Hache was the hero for Canada as they beat Peru 11-1.

Brazil remain unbeaten in both the men’s and women’s after respective wins over Mexico and Costa Rica.

Argentina’s men’s are second in the group on goal difference, registering their first win against Guatemala 13-5 on Monday.

The men’s group games conclude on Tuesday to determine the quarter-final match-ups for Wednesday.

In the women’s the round robin games will continue until Thursday, followed by the semi-final on Friday.

All medal matches will be contested on Saturday (31 August).

Football-5-a-side

Defending champions Brazil got their first win after two draws in their opening games.

Taking on Mexico, Ricardinho claimed the first goal six minutes in before Gledson added another to bring the score to 2-0 just before half-time. Ricardinho then secured the win ahead of the final whistle.

But Brazil’s rivals Argentina sit top of the group with their second win of the tournament, this time against Peru.

All of Argentina’s goals came in the first half including two from Maxi Espinillo at five and eight minutes. Nicolas Veliz added another in the dying seconds of the half and the deficit was too much for Peru to overcome.

Following two draws Colombia were looking for their first win in their match against Costa Rica.

Their mission was successful as Juan Pablo Santa Cruz and Juan David Perez Quintero found the back of the net twice with no reply from the Costa Ricans.

Blind footballers will now enjoy a day off on Tuesday before playing their final group games on Wednesday and Thursday. The final will be contested on Friday (30 August).
