Spain and France to meet for Blind Football European Champions title
Date: September 24, 2019
Today is the big day at the IBSA Blind Football European Championships in Rome as France and Spain meet in the final at 15:00.
The teams reached the final after beating England and Turkey in the semi-finals and confirming their place at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Today the focus is on winning the coveted title of IBSA Blind Football European Champions 2019 at the 12th edition of the event.
Curiously, the last time the two met in the European Championships final was also in Italy, back in 2013 in Loanao when a Vicente Aguilar goal in the 10th minute of the second half won gold for the Spaniards.
Spain has taken the European title seven times (1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2013) while France has won the championships twice, in 2009 and 2011.
Spain and France have joined hosts Japan, Brazil and Argentina in qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Before the final, England and Turkey will play for bronze at 11:30.
In yesterday's placement matches, Romania secured 9th spot over Greece, Germany took 7th with a win over Belgium, and Russia finished 5th by defeating hosts Italy
