Russian judoka Kuramagomedov nominated for IPC’s Athlete of the Month

Date: August 8, 2019

Category: Judo

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has revealed the shortlist for July’s Allianz Athlete of the Month, including Russian judoka Abdula Kuramagomedov.

The public can now vote for the winner on www.paralympic.org until 9 August.

Kuramagomedov delivered the shock of the season so far in the men’s up to 100kg at the 2019 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Judo European Championships in Genova, Italy, beating Georgian world champion Zviad Gogotchuri.

Going into the fight Gogotchuri was unbeaten in either the up to 90kg or his current weight category, which he switched to after winning gold at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

It was a mistake from Gogotchuri, kneeling into a throw, that led to Kuramagomedov turning him over for ippon.

Other nominees for July include Malaysian powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, Nigerian lifter Bose Omolayo, Dutch wheelchair basketball player Mariska Beijer and Italian sitting volleyball ace Siliva Biasi.

The 2019 winners are:

January – Jeroen Kampschreur, NED, alpine skiing
February – Yujie Li, CHN, taekwondo
March – Lisa Bunschoten, NED, snowboard
April – Michael Roeger, AUS, athletics
May – Koji Sugeno, JPN, wheelchair tennis
June – Antoni Ponce, ESP, swimming
