A new name has gone on the trophy for IBSA Blind Football European Champions as Russia defeats Spain in the final of the tournament to win the European Championships for the first time ever.

Following a 1-1 draw at full-time, it was joy for the Russians as they overcame Spain 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

The 10th IBSA Blind Football European Championships concluded in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday night after eight days of exhilarating matches. A big crowd turned up for both the third-fourth place play-off, won by England 2-0 against France, and the final.

Spain started the match the stronger of the two sides and took the lead in the 11th minute of the first half thanks to a low left-foot shot to the back post by Acosta. However, 2015 beaten finalists Russia were never out of the game and Igorov equalised in the 10th minute of the second half.

With the scores equal after 40 minutes, the game went straight to a penalty shoot-out. It was 2-2 after the three strikes from each team, so the title went to sudden death.

Both teams scored their fourth spot kick, but Spain couldn't convert its fifth and it was player of the tournament Andrei Tikhonov who stepped up to hit the back of the net and give Russia its first ever major title.
