Rio 2016 blind football gold for Brazil

Date: September 18, 2016

Category: Football

Brazil triumphed once again in the Football 5-a-side (blind football) tournament at the Paralympic Games, taking gold yesterday in the final against Iran.

It was Brazil's fourth consecutive gold medal at the Paralympic Games, and they remain the only team to win the event since the sport made its Paralympic debut in Athens 2002.

In front of a huge crowd, the host country defeated Asian champions Iran thanks to a 10th-minute strike from star player Ricardinho. Iran's attempts to pull back an equaliser were in vain, so it was Brazil who took top spot on the podium.

Following the highly successful tournament in Rio, blind football now looks forward to an action-packed 2017, with regional championships in Africa, America, Asia and Europe on the schedule and a number of other big tournaments and major development projects in the pipeline.
