Judo: Tokyo in the farewell to 2023

Date: December 5, 2023

Category: Judo

The 2023 IBSA Judo Grand Prix Tokyo at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gimnasium closed the competition’s calendar for 2023. The Road to Paris 2024 is now reduced to three major events next year; the time for all decisions as the way to the next Paralympics is getting very narrow.

Every point earned is crucial for the World and Paralympic rankings, and getting them into the cradle of Judo has, for sure, a special meaning.

Day 2 of the competition brought to the three tatamis available the heavyweight categories. In the men’s J1 class, Moldova ruled the gold medals with Oleg Cretul (-90kg) and Ion Basoc (+90 kg), defeating their opponents, the British Daniel Powell and the Azeri two-time Paralympic champion and three-time World champion, Ilham Zakiyev.

In the women’s competition, spotlight is on the North American duel in the J1-57kg with Liana Mutia (USA) and Priscila Gagne (Canada), with the victory pending to Liana, although both are well positioned in the Paralympic ranking towards Paris 2024.
