An impressive 39 countries won at least one medal, showing the global spread of talent even at a time when awareness of Para sport was low.

Host Spain topped the table with 29 golds, 30 silver and 22 bronze. Canada, who would go on to stage the next edition in Quebec in 2003, finished second. Great Britain were third.
