Judo, Goalball, Swimming, AthleticsThe very first IBSA World Games were held in Madrid, Spain, in 1998.
Born out of a desire to provide a multi-sport competition specifically for athletes with visual impairments, they were called the IBSA World Championships and Games.
Athletics, swimming, goalball and judo were on the programme and the event provided the blueprint for all other IBSA World Games.
Participant Numbers: 719 athletes from 71 countries.
An impressive 39 countries won at least one medal, showing the global spread of talent even at a time when awareness of Para sport was low.
Host Spain topped the table with 29 golds, 30 silver and 22 bronze. Canada, who would go on to stage the next edition in Quebec in 2003, finished second. Great Britain were third.
