IBSA Goalball Worlds – frontrunners start to shine
Date: July 2, 2014
Category: Goalball
Day two was a day where the rankings within the pools begun to take shape.
One fine example of this is Pool B in the mens competition.
Brazil, Lithuania and Turkey have won all their four matches almost without any trouble. Canada, Belgium, China and Egypt all have one win. Japan remains winless after four matches.
One of the teams in the bottom category will get a place to the quarterfinals. Top three teams can be quite sure of their place in the playoffs.
Turkey will meet both Brazil and Lithuania on Wednesday so they will be the matches to look forward to. Lithuania and Brazil meet each other on Thursday evening.
Finland climbed to the top of the men’s Pool A after winning both of Tuesday’s matches. It seems that Finland, Algeria, USA, Czech Republic, Spain and maybe Iran will be fighting for the top four positions in Pool A.
Turkey and Brazil continued their impressive run in the women’s competition. Turkey beat the Paralympic gold medalist Japan 5-1 and Brazil won against Sweden 7-2. Also Russia has started well. They won against Germany 10-2 on Tuesday and top the Pool X with Turkey after two playing days.
Pool Y also seems to be headed down a similar road to male Pool B. Israel, China and Brazil are the clear top three teams in this pool while Australia, Ukraine and Sweden will battle for the fourth quarter final spot.
