Date: June 15, 2014
Category: Goalball
Above you can find the links to the IBSA Goalball world rankings as of 31 May, 2014. Please note that this does not include the results from the 2014 Malmö InterCups. This tournament was completed on June 1 which means it will be included in the next rankings update. We would also like to let you know that the next rankings update will be released a little earlier than normal to have the latest rankings out just prior to the start of the 2014 IBSA Goalball World Championships.
Now that is all said, let’s move on the more interesting information.
Men
There was not much movement amongst the top 10. Canada and Finland switched places with Canada moving up one spot to 6 and Finland dropping back one to 7. Apart from this there was only one other change, a new team to welcome into the top 10. Japan is debuting in the top 10 at 10. This is after a nice rise of six spots.
The top 20 also saw two newcomers. Saudi Arabia jumped up ten spots to now be at 18 and Nicaragua leaped a mighty 17 spots to now be at 19. Another team out of the America’s that also had a very healthy rise was Guatemala who rose to 30 from 49. The good news kept on coming for the Central American nations. Costa Rica didn’t quite emulate Guatemala’s efforts but they rose 18 spots (one less than Guatemala) to now be at 38 from 56.
Despite Guatemala’s mighty jump, they still didn’t get this month’s bullet. That went to Oman who moved up a mega 32 spots to 26 from 58.
A busy month on the rankings for the American nations would not be complete without a debut. Panama has also now joined the rankings. They appear for the first time at 60.
Women
China and Canada continue their tussle at the top for the number one position. Canada has reclaimed the number one position again from China who is back at two.
The exchanging of spots continued for places three and four. Japan moved up one to take third spot while USA slipped down one to 4.
Following this, there is still more shuffling happening within the top 10 but not all clear exchanges. Sweden is back in the top 5 from 7. Brazil also continues a steady rise now moving up one spot for the second month in a row putting them now at 7. Finland also enjoyed a rise of two positions to 8th spot. Australia rounds off the top 10 after dropping back four positions to return to their position held two months ago.
So despite so much shuffling with the top 10 it continues to be made up of the same 10 nations as it has now been for many months.
Elsewhere, Great Britain made a small attack towards the top 10. The moved up three to 12th.
Nations debuting from the America’s was also the case for the female side. Guatemala was the highest of these debutants at 15 followed by Honduras (22), Costa Rica (25) and Panama (26).
