IBSA Euro Challenge Cup 2014 kicks off

Date: July 10, 2014

Category: Football

The IBSA Euro Challenge Cup in Blind Football 2014 is up and running in Brezineves, close to Prague, Czech Republic.

The tournament is a development event for new blind football countries and features six newcomers to the international scene – Poland, Romania, Hungary, Moldova, Belgium and hosts the Czech Republic.

Play began this morning with the first ever match between Belgium and Moldova. The Red Blind Devils took the honours 2-1 thanks to two goals from striker Kevin Vanderborght, with Moldova scoring through Vasili Cripolapov.

The second fixture of the day saw Hungary take on Romania. Hungary took an early lead when István Szabó struck, but Romania fought back to turn the score around thanks to two goals by Tiberiu Paun. It looked as if it was game over for the Hungarians before Szabó equalised to earn a share of the points.

Following a short official opening ceremony with local dignatories and IBSA President Jannie Hammershoi in attendance, it was time for the host team Czech Republic to make their debut in the tournament against Belgium…and they couldn't have asked for a better start to the event when they soaked up some early Belgian pressure and then struck on the counter attack through Jan Mrázek.

Despite having most of the ball the Belgians couldn't find a way through the resilient Czech defence, and 1-0 it finished.

Poland and Romania are playing in the fourth and final match of the day.

Tomorrow's schedule is as follows (all times CET):

09:00 Moldova vs Czech Republic

11:00 Hungary vs Poland

16:00 Semi-final 1: Winner group A vs Runners-up group B

18:00 semi-final 2: Winner group B vs Runners-up group A
