IBSA Blind Football heads to Portugal for development workshops

Date: November 14, 2019

Category: Football

In co-operation with the Portuguese National Blind Sports Association (ANDDVIS), IBSA Blind Football heads to Lisbon this weekend to take part in development workshops.

The workshops are the first phase of the project The Game Is Coming, funded by the Portuguese Football Federation as part of its football and social responsibility activities. Coaches from blind sports clubs, physical education teachers and students and representatives from professional football clubs, among others, will attend the two-day workshops, which include both theory and hands-on sessions.

The classroom sessions tomorrow will take place at the Portuguese Football Federation's Cidade de Futebol.

The second stage of the project, scheduled for the first half of next year, involves four demonstration sessions with visually impaired students and their peers from five different schools in the Lisbon district.

The third phase will see two friendly matches featuring rising stars from the demonstration sessions and older players who who used to play or still do play blind football.

Portugal was one of the first countries in Europe to have a national blind football team and competed in the IBSA Blind Football European Championships from 1997 until 2005. Unfortunately Portugal dropped out in 2007 and has not competed internationally since.

IBSA Blind Football is working to bring the game to every blind and partially sighted woman, man, girl and boy in Europe through its Development Project Europe. This project is made possible thanks to financial support from UEFA. For more information on the project contact [email protected].
