Great start for Brazil & Turkey at IBSA Goalball Worlds

Date: June 30, 2014

Category: Goalball

It was a great day for Brazil and Turkey in the 2014 IBSA Goalball World Championships. Both countries won all of their three matches. Brazil beat Belgium 7-3 and China 14-6 in men’s Pool B and also won against Australia 9-5 in women’s Pool Y.

Turkey performed outstandingly in their opening match in women’s Pool X beating host Finland 12-2. Those same countries met in the 2013 European Championship semifinal and nobody could have guessed that the rematch would be so uneven. The Turkish men beat China 8-6 and Belgium 6-4 in men’s Pool B.

Spain has had the tightest defense so far in the men’s competition. They managed to take two 1-0 wins and didn’t concede a single goal against USA and Germany in the men’s Pool A.

Algeria’s start was very sleepy in men’s Pool A. They were 2-7 down against Ukraine on half time but climbed back into the game and took the points 10-7. In their second match of the day Algeria beat Czech Republic 7-5. That might have been a crucial win in a fight for the top spot of the Pool A.
Lithuania took the top spot in Pool B winning Japan 9-7 and Canada 13-3.

In the women’s competition there were two top quality matches. In Pool X Russia overcame USA 3-0 with Anastasiia Mazur scoring all of the goals. In Pool Y China and Israel played the only draw of the day with game ending 4-4.
