The British girls team enjoyed a successful day at the 2019 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball Youth World Championships in Penrith, Australia, on Tuesday (6 August), ending the day undefeated in the tournament so far.

Great Britain won both of their matches, adding to their opening win on Monday (5 August).

Their first game on Tuesday was against South Korea. Four first-half goals from Megan Smithson-Booth, Amelia Robertson and Antonia Bunyan, with another in the second from Bunyan, was enough to secure a 5-3 victory.

In Great Britain’s second match versus Germany, the team also registered a comfortable 6-1 win.

Defending champions Australia got their first win on the board against Thailand, doing all of their work in the first half to end it with a seven goal lead.

Molly Smith opened the scoring, finding the net twice before handing over to her teammates. Genevieve Weston got involved eight minutes in and was followed by Amy Ridley who netted two.

Eager to not be left-out, Alana Tiller added her own goal and then Ridley rounded-off the scoring for a hat-trick.

Thailand did get one back for the only goal in the second half but did not have the momentum to challenge their opponents. The final score was 7-1.

Brazil, the bronze medallists from the last edition in Budapest, Hungary, in 2017 reached their latest win against Thailand. Monica Santos was instrumental in securing maximum points, reaching the back of the Thai net six times over the match to contribute to the 11-1 scoreline.

Boys

A Thai team on the march beat Brazil 7-3 to secure the first of two wins of the day. With the scores even at 1-1 at half-time, Thailand really came alive in the second 12 minutes.

Kerati Ying Yuen, Kitsada Thanyanwanitphong and Thanechot Chameram all bagged goals, with a hat-trick for Thanyanwanitphong to bring his game total to four.

Brazil opened the second half well, facing up to the Thai attack and scoring two goals of their own, but could not hold them off.

Thailand doubled-up in their match against South Korea. Kerati put three goals on the board for his team after the first whistle following a close opening half ended 2-1 to Thailand.

Chameram then netted one more with nine seconds left on the clock. The final score in that tie was 6-1.

Poland saw-off hosts Australia 11-1 with all goals coming in the first half to end the game early. Just over half of Poland’s goals came from Dawid Nowakowski with the star attacker netting six in total.

Australia then suffered another heavy defeat against Brazil, once again losing 11-1.

The 2019 IBSA Goalball Youth World Championships run from 5-9 August. Twelve boys and girls teams from eight countries are playing for the titles, with Australia the defending champions in the girls.
