Goalball youth Worlds moved to 2022

Date: September 21, 2020

Category: Goalball

The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball has announced that the next edition of the youth World Championships will take place from 15-20 March 2022.

The host city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, remains the same.

The competition, which is an important proving ground for the next generation of goalball players, was originally scheduled for November 2021. However to give more time for the Local Organising Committee to prepare, IBSA Goalball has approved a date change.

Hosts Brazil will be looking to defend their girls title won in Penrith, Australia, in 2019.

Overall the event is expected to attract between 8-10 boys and girls teams from 10 countries as they look to show-off their future talent.

Kari Rasanen, Chair of the IBSA Goalball Committee, said: “Next year us shaping-up to be very busy with regional Championships, including re-scheduled European Championships for groups B and C, as well as the postponed Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

“In response to this we, along with the organisers, felt that the youth World Championships would benefit from being moved by a few months into 2022. This will mean that the youth and senior Worlds will take place in the same year for the first time, which is an exciting prospect.”

The 2022 IBSA Goalball Youth World Championships will take place in Sao Paulo ahead of the 2022 IBSA Goalball World Championships in Hangzhou, China, from 3-15 July.

Sao Paulo is also set to host the 2021 Americas Championships from 6-13 November.

After a gap in competitions due to coronavirus, the 2021 IBSA Goalball European Championships B will be held in Pajulahti, Finland, from 27-31 January.

The 2021 IBSA Goalball European C Championships in Târgu-Mureş, Romania, follow from 11-18 April.
