Goalball: Two days to the quarter-finals, time is running out

Date: December 12, 2022

Category: Goalball

The quarter-finals of the 2022 IBSA Goalball World Championships are coming, and so is the heat of the decisions to secure a spot in them. The leaders of the four groups (two women and two men) have already granted their way to the next stage.

As result of another win on Day 6, Canada, Israel (women, group A and B), Brazil, and China (men, group C and D) have no more worries about the quarter-finals. Of course, ending in first means that in the way to the semi-finals are the fourth places of the other groups. Check the road to reach it:

Men
C1 vs D4
D2 vs C3

C2 vs D3

In group A, Denmark and Korea, both with 9 points, are in a league of their own. More than advancing to the quarterfinals, the main goal is to avoid finishing fourth and facing Israel.

In group B, the same logic applies but with one extra: Brazil is trying to recover all the points lost in the first three matches, and the best it can reach is the last place with access to the quarter-finals. It will all be decided on Wednesday, when Brazil and Australia face each other to play for the fourth.

Regarding the men’s competition, in group C, Belgium and Germany are deciding which will get the spot in the next stage. Germany has an advantage because it defeated Belgium. Anyway, both have tough Tuesdays on the way, with Japan and Brazil.

In group D, something can be settled this Tuesday, first thing in the morning: Iran vs USA (10 am, CET) will clear the way to the fourth place, given the last day on Wednesday. The goal is really secure the spot in the quarter-finals, once the opponent will be Brazil, for sure.
