Goalball: Some true “finals” and other surprises in Day 2

Date: December 8, 2022

Category: Goalball

Day 2 of the 2022 IBSA Goalball World Championships with 14 matches! National teams’ engines were roaring loud in some true “finals” in the first round of the stage group.

The men began the competition in the secondary hall, but the schedule of matches was for first-class finals. Actually, some of them have already chosen champions.

#Accessibility – Brazilian player on the floor defending the ball against Algeria, which poses no big troubles for the current champions

Brazil kicked things off against Algeria. The current two-times-in-a-row world champion made it look easy, but the eternal African champion replied well. The “finals” came right after.

#Accessibility – Turkey national men’s team celebrating the important victory against Germany, the vice world champions

Turkey’s victory against the current world runners-up, Germany, was tremendous! With just over a minute to the end, they were tied (7-7), and it was precisely the Germans who lost patience and took more risks, conceding three goals in the final moments.

#Accessibility – Yu Qinquan, Chinese Goalball player, on the floor waiting for the ball to come

Another fantastic match was Lithuania vs China, ranked 3rd and 2nd in the last Paralympic Games, respectively. The balance lasted less time than in the confrontation between Turks and Germans, though.

#Accessibility – Arturas Jonikaitis, Lithuanian Goalball player, in the moment to defend the ball with the left elbow almost touching the floor

Despite the cold efficiency of the Lithuanian game, China presented very strong arguments as a serious candidate for the title. There were five goals of difference in the Chinese victory, although this is not a reflection of the distance between the two teams.

The surprise came in the women’s competition. Brazil, one of the strong candidates, lost its first match against Great Britain. There are no questions about it: the “GB” girls were the strongest team on the pitch, 100% focused, and always ahead of their opponents in the score. It was a very good first essay for the British.
