Goalball: Montenegro performed the first surprise in the Euro A

Date: December 10, 2023

Category: Goalball

The home Goalball’s national team of Montenegro performed the first surprise of the 2023 IBSA Goalball European Championships – Division A in Podgorica, defeating Ukraine, one of the favourite squads playing for the continental title.

Ukraine started very well, scoring in the first throw of the match, and Montenegro replied in the same way on the second throw of the match, but unfortunately the referee called noise by the time of the throw, so it didn’t count.

Things started to get more complicated for the home team when a long ball penalty got Ukraine to score the second goal, a very comfortable advantage in an early stage of the match. The Ukrainian squad got two more opportunities to raise the score, but Montenegro’s defence was already on high alert.

In the last three minutes of the first half, Montenegro managed to score three goals, taking the lead in the match at halftime.

Ukraine was the first to score in the second half, equalising the scorer, but another long ball penalty put Montenegro ahead again to never lose the lead, even amplifying the advantage to the final result (6-3).

In the other match of men’s group B, Israel defeated Finland (6-3).

In men’s group A, Lithuania continues its path of success, this time defeating Great Britain (1-11), while Germany defeated its neighbour Belgium (8-0), recovering from the first defeat against Lithuania in Day 1, the first match of the tournament.

In the women’s competition, the current Paralympic, World, and European champions, Türkiye, are already the only women’s team to get two victories in two matches, today with Great Britain (5-3), in group C. Israel also remains unbeaten, but it has only played one match today, against Greece (8-1).
