Goalball joy for Finland and Denmark at IBSA European Championships Men A and Women A

Finland (Men’s competition) and Denmark (Women’s competition) overcame strong opposition to take the title of IBSA European Champions in Assens, Denmark, at the recently-concluded 2011 IBSA European Goalball Championships (A).

The Finnish men’s team, having shown no mercy in beating Sweden 13-3 in the semi-final, went on to defeat Lithuania 9-3 in the final. In addition to winning the gold medals and European title, Finland qualifies for the 2012 London Paralympic Games, as do beaten finalists Lithuania.

Final standings men’s competition:

5 Slovenia
6 Spain
7 Germany
8 Belgium
9 Hungary
10 Denmark.

In the women’s competition, hosts Denmark and Russia met in the final following wins over Spain and Sweden respectively in the semis. In a close final, Karina Jorgensen scored the winning goal for the Danes to give them a 4-3 victory. Denmark also secured qualification for next year’s Paralympic Games.

The 2011 IBSA European Goalball Championships were hosted by the Danish Sports Organization for the Disabled in collaboration with Assens Municipality, Sport Event Fyn, Sport Event Denmark and DHIF´s main sponsors JYSK and Pressalit.
