International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball was introduced to its latest new country between 11-13 December through a development workshop in New Delhi, India.

India was identified as having huge potential by the sport with the event attracting a total of 132 athletes, coaches and officials from across the country.

Participants were given theoretical and practical training focusing on the rules, essentials of team preparation and coaching, officiating techniques and procedures as well as the administration of sport documentation. Many players also tried the sport for the first time, guided by members of the IBSA Goalball Committee.

The workshops took place as part of the 21st USHA National Athletics Championships for the Blind, the biggest event on the Indian Blind Sports Association calendar.

Practical training was delivered in cooperation with the Goalball Federation of India (GFI), a group of athletes, coaches and referees who are committed to growing the sport in India. Many players tried goalball for the first time as a result.

New balls, eyeshades and game paperwork were also handed out, giving everyone the tools they need to develop the game in their own states.

Participants will now have the chance to test their new skills in January 2019 when the National Goalball Championships will take place.

The workshops are the latest development activities carried out by IBSA Goalball. In November, a delegation travelled to Stellenbosch, South Africa, to hold the fourth in a series of workshops carried out to grow goalball in Africa. The sessions are supported by the International Paralympic Committee.
