Goalball finals set in Colorado

Date: July 14, 2013

Category: Goalball

Yesterday saw the conclusion of the pool matches in Colorado along with the quarter finals and semi finals. This meaning that only the medal matches need to take place today.

The remaining male matches in the round robin stage were straight forward with the three top nations of Canada, Brazil and USA winning their games with a 10 goal difference.

USA finished top of the pool and therefore took on Argentina in their semi final. This was another routine win for the USA and for the second time that day, with a 10 point goal difference. The second semi final was a lot more interesting. Canada took on Brazil. In what many could have seen as an upset, Canada defeated current Paralympic silver medalist Brazil 6-4. This means that both Canada and the USA have qualified for the 2014 IBSA Goalball World Championships and there will be another USA Canada showdown tomorrow for the gold medal.

In the women’s’ division, the final match was played between USA and Brazil. Brazil overcame the USA 5-3. This resulted in Brazil finishing in the standings second and therefore qualifying for the gold medal match. Due to Brazil having already qualified for the World Championships as host nation of the upcoming Paralympics, even if the USA lose this match, they will finish as the regional champions of the Americas and therefore have qualified for Worlds.

In the world youth tournament, it was a very busy day with the conclusion of the round robin, quarter finals and semi finals. The remainder of the matches was straight forward as well as the quarter finals. The two semi finals were also relatively comfortably won with Japan overcoming Canada and the USA defeating Brazil. Both semi finals were won with a three point difference. This means that Japan will take on the USA for gold and Brazil and Canada will meet for bronze.

The female youth tournament also featured the last of their pool matches on Saturday and then moved straight into the semi finals. One of the last pool matches was Brazil against Australia. Australia won this 4-2 and therefore set up a semi final that afternoon against Brazil. The Brazilians however turned the tables in the match that counted and defeated Australia 6-1. They will take on Russia in the gold medal match after Russia continued their winning ways and saw off the USA 7-4.
