Goalball European Championships B cancelled

Date: May 8, 2020

Category: Goalball

The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball European Championships B, scheduled to take place from 15-22 October in Afula, Israel, has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The competition would have seen the medallists from both the men’s and women’s promoted to the top flight for 2021.

A Test Event scheduled for June has also been cancelled.

IBSA Executive Director, Henk Van Aller, said: “Whilst the Euros B were set to take place towards the end of the year, we agree with the local organisers’ decision to cancel the event on the advice of their health and sport ministries.

“Our thanks go to the Israel Paralympic Committee for all the hard work they have put in to date.”

IBSA Goalball is now reviewing its calendar to see what opportunities there may be to re-schedule the competition.

IBSA Goalball has largely managed to escape cancellations and postponements due to COVID-19, although a series of unofficial events have been affected.

The last major competition was the 2020 IBSA Goalball African Championships in Port Said, Egypt, at the end of February. That concluded the qualification tournaments for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

As a result, IBSA recently announced that all teams who had qualified would retain their slots for the Paralympic Games which will now take place from 24 August – 5 September 2021.

IBSA Goalball is now working on organising classification opportunities for teams with new athletes or those with a classification review date of 2022.
