Goalball: Egypt sees the light at the end of the pyramid in the African Championships

Date: December 12, 2023

Category: Goalball

In the first confrontation between the two African Goalball superpowers, Egypt came out on top, which can be understood as the light at the end of the pyramid for the host national team in the 2023 IBSA Goalball African Championships.

Algeria, throughout history, has been the undisputable leader of the region, but today this hegemony could mean a turnaround in history. Egypt defeated Algeria (10-3) and took the lead in the men’s competition. They will meet again this Wednesday, in the second stage of the double round robin of the tournament, and will probably face each other once more in the final. The importance of this victory can only be measured at the end of the competition, when everything will be decided, not only for the continental title but also for the available slot to Paris 2024.

On the women’s side, Algeria and Egypt (1 and 2 seeds) met today. This time, fate went the other way, with Algeria dominating that match. They too will meet again tomorrow.

In terms of individual achievements, Omar Mebarki (Algeria) is leading the list of the men’s best scorers with 16 goals, and Esraa Ezzeldine (Egypt), with 12 goals, is the women’s best scorer.
