Day 5 review:  By Sam Harris / For IBSA

Tokyo champions Brazil reached a fourth consecutive semi-final at the Paralympics after a 10-0 mercy victory over Egypt with five different goalscorers.

Last failing to make the final four at the Beijing 2008 Games, coach Jonatas Castro, in his first Games in charge, will see his side face Ukraine after doubles for top scorers Leomon Moreno and Andre Dantas with Josemarcio Sousa, Emerson Ernesto and Paulo Saturnino also netting.

This year’s top scorers are the only side to have every player get on the scoresheet in Paris and

continued their run of netting at least seven times in every game so far.

Scarily for the rest of the competition the talent pool in Brazil shows no sign of slowing down according to Moreno: ‘We have so many strong athletes in Brazil who could also be playing here and scoring goals.’

After narrow losses in their first two matches, it is now consecutive mercy defeats for Egypt following their 11-1 loss to Japan and they now have the worst defence in the competition with 34 goals conceded.

China beat France 12-2 in a mercy result to set up a semi-final meeting with Asian rivals Japan.

Mingyuan Yang scored all but one of the goals for the pool A winners as they continued their perfect Paris campaign with a fourth straight victory.

China’s talisman has now scored 23 goals at the Games while at the other end, their strong defence was on display as they showed why they have conceded a competition-low 13 goals.

It was a disappointing way for the hosts’ medal chances to end, days after coming close to a famous draw against the USA.

After beating them at the same stage at last year’s World Games Japan edged past the USA 6-4 to set up a meeting with Asian rivals China in the last-four.

Kazuya Kaneko and Koji Miyajiki both scored hat-tricks including a penalty each to take their combined total to 26 goals.

Rikiya Kudo’s side will be looking to avenge their narrow opening game defeat and a 7-4 quarter-final defeat three years ago.

For the USA, it’s a first defeat at this stage since Sydney 2000 and means they will finish out of the medals for a second straight Games after finishing fourth in Tokyo.

Three goals in the last minute saw Ukraine stun Iran 6-3 to book a place in the Paralympics semi-finals for the first time in dramatic fashion.

Top-scorer Vasyl Oliinyk and Anton Strelchyk’s late strikes ensured the European champions didn’t rue three missed penalties as they advanced to face Tokyo gold medalists Brazil in the last-four.

Now they have given themselves a chance of a medal, Fedir Sydorenko is aware of the team’s importance on and off the court: ‘It would be the biggest achievement for our team and our sport. Our country would be proud of us. It is very important in this hard time for us.’

For Iran, it was a second straight defeat at this stage having lost to Finland in 2012 with Nematollah Sarafraz’s hat-trick and two penalty saves coming in vain.

It was a cruel twist of irony for Asian Games holders who had netted three times late on themselves to draw with Brazil but they were unable to show their previous attacking flair which had seen them score 26 in the group stage.
