Goalball confirmed for Tokyo 2020

Date: October 9, 2014

Category: Goalball

During a meeting held on October 7, in Berlin, the IPC governing board approved 16 sports that will be part of the Paralympic program at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. One of the sports that have been ensured inclusion in the Paralympic program in six years is goalball.

Goalball along with 23 other eligible sports was required to submit their application for inclusion on July 28. Since this time the IPC has been extensively reviewing all applications.

Sports were selected on worldwide participation in terms of countries and continents where the sport is regularly practiced, quadrennial competition programme, athlete classification, anti-doping programme, rules and regulations, and initiatives undertaken to make their sport more attractive.

A further up to seven more sports will also receive their confirmation in January, 2015.

We would like to congratulate all those who are involved in goalball either as an athlete, administrator or official. It is through your efforts to remain professional both on and off the court that has led to this inclusion. Furthermore it is also due to the hard work of many volunteers who have dedicated themselves to raising the profile of goalball.
