Category: Goalball

The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball has announced that Port Said, Egypt, will host the 2020 African Championships – the last qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

The competition will take place from 28 February – 6 March and is expected to attract 12 men’s and women’s teams.

It will be organised by the Egyptian Blind Sports Association.

Kari Rasanen, Chairperson of the IBSA Goalball Committee, said: “We are grateful to the Local Organising Committee for their bid to host the African Championships.

“We have done a lot of work in recent years to attract new countries, players, referees and coaches in the region into goalball through various seminars, and by donating equipment, to give the people on the ground the resources they need to build their own programmes.

“I am sure Port Said 2020 will be an excellent event which will showcase the growing professionalism and standard of play in Africa.”

The 2020 IBSA Goalball African Championships will be the sixth qualifier to take place for Tokyo 2020.

It follows regional competitions in Lima, Peru; Rostock, Germany, and Chiba, Japan as well as the International Qualifier in Fort Wayne, USA. The 2018 IBSA Goalball World Championships in Malmo, Sweden, also delivered qualification for the top three teams.

As well as the title on offer in Port Said, the gold medallist will secure their ticket to the next Paralympic Games.

In addition to the announcement of the hosts, IBSA Goalball is calling on level II and level III referees to register their interest to officiate.

Those interested should submit their application to [email protected] by 9 January 2020. The selected officials will be informed by 22 January and will be asked to confirm their selection within a week.
