Blind football features in UEFA report

Date: May 5, 2020

Category: Football

Blind football development efforts in Europe are highlighted in a report released last week by UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations.

The annual UEFA Football & Social Responsibility report for the 2018-2019 season covers the key work carried out by the IBSA Football Committee to further develop the game in Europe through its Blind Football Development Project Europe, a major multi-year initiative funded by the governing body for football in Europe.

Among the achievements highlighted in the report is the introduction of blind football to four new countries during the period:

– representatives from the three Balkan nations – Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia – took part in a coach education workshop in Tallinn as part of the UEFA Super Cup celebrations in August 2018. The workshop, hosted by the Estonian Football Association, was followed by an exhibition at the UEFA Fanzone in the city centre.

– IBSA Blind Football took the game to Kazakhstan in November 2018 in response to an invitation from Almaty-based professional club FC Kairat, which had set up the first team in the country. Since then support has been given to establish several clubs all over the country.

The report also showcases the support given in terms of equipment, with 260 balls, 406 sets of eyeshades and 55 sets of blackout masks donated to 33 European countries, including 10 new countries.

IBSA and UEFA have a long-term partnership for the development of football opportunities for blind and partially sighted people all over the continent. IBSA is one of the partners included in the diversity & inclusion strand of its Football & Social Responsibility portfolio. As such, UEFA makes an annual financial contribution to deliver the IBSA Blind Football Development Project Europe.
