Blind Football African Championships kick off today

Today is a big day in blind football as the 2017 IBSA Blind Football African Championships begin in Praia, Cape Verde.

The 2017 championships bring together four teams for the third ever all-African event. Reigning champions Morocco, who won the title in Cameroon in 2015, will be looking to repeat its success, but it will face tough competition from Mali (3rd in 2015), Egypt (6th in Cameroon), and the hosts Cape Verde, who are making their international debut in the sport.

Hosted by the Cape Verde Paralympic Committee at the national football stadium, the championships kick off later today at 13:30 local time (GMT-1) when the defending champions Morocco face Egypt. There will then be a short opening ceremony, followed by the match between Cape Verde and Mali.

In addition to the title of African champions for the winner, the top two teams in the championships will also qualify for the 2018 IBSA Blind Football World Championships in Madrid, Spain (June 5th-18th).
