The Greater Accra Blind Sports team emerged winners of the 2018 African Unity Day Goalball competition held at the KNUST campus on Friday May 25 in Kumasi. The annual event saw three regions – Greater Accra, Ashanti and the Brong Ahafo region – taking part in the 2018 edition to mark African Union Day.

The Greater Accra Region team won all their games in both male and female categories making them champions for the third year running. The activity forms part of measures to popularize the sport in Ghana and also prepare the regions ahead of the National Sports Festival in Cape Coast in August this year.

Hosted by the Ghana Blind Sports Association, in the words of its President Eric Kissi “the event was fruitful and our aim is to make sure all our regions are active with sports”.

"This year we had three regions taking part we are sure next year the numbers will go up looking at the growing interest”, added Kissi. Brong Ahafo will host the 2019 AU DAY event in Sunyani.

The activity forms part of measures to popularize the sport in Ghana, and according to Kissi there are plans to introduce other sporting disciplines, including national showdown championship on September 21st.

The African Day is an annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity on May 25, 1963. The day is observed in countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Spain, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The Ghana Blind Sports Association is the sports wing of the Ghana Blind Union and is affiliated to the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA). It is mandated to develop blind sports in association with the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana.
