Blind football round up from Toronto 2015 Parapans

Date: August 12, 2015

Category: Football

The blind football competition at the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games enters its fourth match day later today following a day off yesterday.

The competition features six of the best teams from the continent – Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay and Colombia – in a round-robin league format, followed by medal placement games next Friday (August 14th).

Brazil leads the pack with a maximum nine points from three games and has scored an incredible 13 goals so far without conceding a single one. Victories over Chile (6-0), Colombia (3-0) and Uruguay (4-0) mean the current IBSA World Champions and Paralympic champions are looking good to retain the Parapan title they won in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2011.

Raimundo Alves Mendes is top scorer for Brazil on 7 goals.

Argentina is chasing hard and holds second slot in the league on seven points thanks to wins against Uruguay (6-0) and Mexico (1-0) and a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Colombia. Lucas Rodríguez and Silvio Velo are both on two goals for Los Murciélagos (The Bats) as the team is affectionately known.

Colombia sits third after its draw against Argentina and a 3-0 victory over Mexico on match day 1. Mexico is one point behind on 3, while Uruguay and Chile are both on one point.

Today’s fixture list pits the top two teams against each other in a classic South American blind football encounter – Brazil against Argentina. The match kicks off at 18:00 local time. Uruguay and Mexico meet at 16:00 and the day concludes with Chile vs. Colombia at 20:00 (all times local).

The top placed team in Toronto 2015 not already qualified for next year’s Paralympic Games in Rio is sure of a slot for the games. With Brazil and Argentina already through all eyes will be on the remaining teams to see who wins the coveted slot for Rio 2016.
