Super European Goalball League set for 2014
Date: December 22, 2013
Category: Goalball
End 2014 will see the return of the Super European Goalball League (SEGL). This high level club competition will be back for its second season.
The goal of this competition is to get the best players in Europe playing against each other for their club or as part of another club. This tournament is really about bringing the best that Europe has to offer together; sighted or vision impaired doesn’t matter.
If you would like a reminder about how the SEGL works and its goals, read our interview with Erkki Miinala from the first season here.
The three organising teams that are fighting for the title in 2014 are Old Power from Finland, Saltinis from Lithuania and finally FIFH Malmö out of Sweden.
Saltinis were the undisputed champions in 2013 and they will be certainly out to defend their title. The Lithuanians are known for being a great goalball nation and this also transfers into club level.
Old Power is exactly what the name suggests. The team may feature past and present members of the Finnish national team but that doesn’t mean that they are a push over. This is a nation that does currently hold the title of Paralympic champions after all.
FIFH Malmö really is a club team that is all about bringing the best players together. This team is largely filled with top players from the Swedish and Danish national teams.
The dates for 2014 are as follows:
The first stage: 29.8. – 31.8.2014 Malmo, Sweden (Organizer FIFH Malmo)
The second stage: 14.11. – 16.11.2014 Espoo, Finland (Organizer Old Power)
The final stage: 19.12. – 21.12.2014 Vilnius, Lithuania (Organizer Saltinis)
Like in 2013, each stage is open to three additional teams. This is to offer a bit of extra spice to the tournament. You are free to compete in just one leg or all three if you wish. If you are interested in joining one or more stages to offer a greater challenge for the three main teams, then please contact one of the organisers below.
