Goalball: Last call for the finals in Portugal

Date: December 13, 2022

Category: Goalball

Day 7 of the 2022 IBSA Goalball World Championships has been completed, and Day 8 will be the last call for the finals.

This was the day when the victory of the USA men’s team against Iran made them equal in points with the Persian squad, which makes the last round of the stage group truly “all or nothing” for these two teams.

In theory, the USA has it much easier than Iran, although Iran is still in fourth place. The USA will play against Colombia, and Iran will face Ukraine. Tomorrow, all will be decided!

This was regarding group D, with China leading the standings and with the first place secured, no matter what happens in the last round.

Brazil has also declared its group C leadership, leaving Japan and Turkey to decide the second and third places. Japan played this past Tuesday against Germany with an unquestionable victory of 11-1. The Germans, who will finish this stage group with a game against Algeria, are expecting no surprises from the match between Belgium and Turkiye.

In the women’s competition, Canada (A) and Israel (B) are leaders of their groups, and Turkiye has also secured its second place in group A. The rest is still open, with Korea, Denmark, and Algeria deciding the third and fourth places, respectively. The African champion has the most difficult task to do: it has to achieve the same result as Denmark, but it will go against the leader, Canada.

In group B, Great Britain (13 points), Japan (13 points), and the USA (12 points) have already earned their tickets to the quarter-finals but the question is in which place they will finish to know the following matches.

There are only excellent reasons not to miss the last day of the stage groups. Follow all the action on the IBSA live stream webpage, or check the results live on our Twitter or Facebook accounts (@IBSABlindSports), updated in the moment!
