2020 IBSA Blind Football World Grand Prix groups drawn

The 2020 IBSA Blind Football World Grand Prix is fast approaching and some of the world’s best teams have signed up to battle for the title. The draw for the group stage of the tournament, one of the highlights of the blind football calendar, was held yesterday in Tokyo.

The Japan Blind Football Association, organisers of the tournament, have confirmed the teams that will take part this year and made the draw for the first stage of the event.

Four of the top five teams in the world ranking table will be in action, including IBSA World and Paralympic Champions Brazil and top-ranked nation and defending champions Argentina. China (3rd place in the rankings) and Spain (5th) will also be fancied.

France (11th spot in the ranking table), hosts Japan (13th), Thailand (17th) and Germany (20th) will be looking to upset the big guns in this year’s WGP, which will take place at Tennozu Park in Shinagawa from Monday March 16th to Saturday March 21st.

The opening match of the 2020 WGP will see Brazil face Spain at 11:00 local time on Monday March 16th. Group matches will be played over three days and will conclude on Wednesday March 18th.
 
Players will take a rest the following day before placement matches and the semi-finals on Friday 20th. The final will be at 18:00 on Saturday 21st.
 
All matches will be streamed live.

Argentina will be defending the title it won at the 2019 WGP, defeating England 2-0 in the final. Spain took bronze last year thanks to a 1-0 victory over Japan.
