2013 IBSA Goalball African Championships Update

Date: October 3, 2013

Category: Goalball

As a result of the unrest in Egypt, IBSA Goalball has been forced to change the location for the 2013 IBSA Goalball African Championships.

IBSA Goalball is now negotiating with the sports association in Kenya with the intention to hold the games in Nairobi December 2 – 7.

When it became apparent that the games could no longer go ahead in Cairo, IBSA Goalball started the tough task of finding another host. A number of different countries were approached without any success.

During the IBSA General Assembly this issue was discussed with the new Chairman of IBSA Africa, Mr. Martin Okiyo, and delegates from other African countries. The offer was extended to IBSA Goalball to host the championships in Mr. Okiyo´s nation of Kenya.

During the weekend just past, IBSA Goalball conducted a site visit. The venue and accommodation are at an adequate level and therefore approved.

We are now awaiting government approval before these championships can be confirmed.

IBSA Goalball will work very closely with the tournament organisers to try and get everything organized to a good standard and on time. Funding has been made available so regular visits can be made.

The support that IBSA Goalball will offer is extensive. This includes the organisation of a referee and coach’s clinic as was previously planned for prior to the original Cairo games.

IBSA Goalball apologises for any inconvenience that this change may have caused.

If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact our Sport Director, Kari Rasanen.
