Turkish blind judoka Demircan Guler receives IOC Fair Play Award

Date: March 10, 2015

Category: Judo

Demircan Guler from Turkey was recently awarded the International Olympic Committee Fair Play Award in recognition of a remarkable sporting gesture she performed at the IBSA Judo World Championships in Colorado Spring (USA) in September 2014.

Ms Guler was wrongly adjudged to have won a fight at the championships by ippon. A protest from the coach of the losing athlete led to an inconclusive study of the video evidence available, but Mr Guler recognised that she had not won the fight and the ippon was performed by her opponent, who went on to take gold at the World Championships.

Following this display of sportswomanship, Ms Guler's name was put to the IOC Fair Play Committee as a worthy recipient of the Fair play Award, which was presented to her at the recent IBSA Judo World Cup 2015 in Eger, Hungary.

The pictures show the award being presented by Dr. Kamuti Jenő, Chairman of the Fair Play Committee, Bert Van De Flier (Treasurer), Mrs. Jannie Hammershoi, IBSA President, and Mr. Norbert Bíró, Chairman of the IBSA Judo Committee.
