Match day 4 round-up – England and Spain through to semis at IBSA Blind Football European Championships

Date: September 21, 2019

Category: Football

Spain and England have secured semi-final spots at the tournament, with the other two places to be decided today on match day 5.

Spain (Group A) and England (Group B) made sure of their place in tomorrow's semi-finals in their morning matches yesterday.

First up was England, who defeated Greece 3-0 in the opening game through goals from Coleman and English and an own goal by Siotas. England moved to eight points (two wins and two draws) and can now rest until tomorrow safe in the knowledge that one of the two slots is theirs.

In yesterday's second game Spain showed no mercy as they looked to book their place in the semis. The former European Champions ran out easy winners in their game against Romania (7-0). Antonio Martín hit the back of the net three times – he leads the goalscorers table on six goals – Alamar struck two and López and Acosta scored one apiece.

Germany and France then played out a tough and tight match in Group B which ended in a 1-1 draw. Arezki's 19th-minute strike for France was immediately neutralised by a fantastic goal from Fangmann after a solo run, and there was no further scoring in the second half. The draw means Germany cannot now qualify for the semi-finals but France is in a strong position to secure a place today.

Another tough match ensued as Turkey and Belgium met in the final game of the day. Both teams still had hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals and it was a close-fought affair until Kurbetoglu found the back of the Belgian met in the 6th minute of the second half to give the Turks three points. Turkey will fancy its chances of winning a place in the semis in its game later today.
