With the exciting 2-1 win, the Malaysians ended their campaign on top of the four-team group on seven points while Thailand finished a point behind.

Ahmad Fikri grabbed the winner for Malaysia with a fine solo goal after Thailand’s Kittikorn Baodee had cancelled out Mohamed Zamha’s opener.

Thailand had a chance to level things up near the end when they were awarded a penalty but Panyawaut Kupan was unable to convert.

"We've developed the game since 2009 and we lost to Thailand in 2014. This joy is so meaningful,” said Malaysian coach Shalesh Manickavasagam.

Vietnam took the bronze medal after their 2-0 victory over hosts Singapore earlier in the day put them in third spot.
