At the IBSA Executive Board meeting on March 6, 2025, the election of the new Chairperson of the Athletes’ Council was discussed. Following the appeal from former Chairperson Iida Kauppila, the Executive Board took note of the election of Sela Odhiambo (Kenya) as the new Chairperson of the Athletes’ Council, selected from the current members of the Council.
This election highlights IBSA’s commitment to strengthening the representation of athletes in decision-making processes and ensuring a more active role for athletes at all levels of the organization. Sela Odhiambo brings significant experience in sport and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by athletes with visual impairments.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the IBSA Athletes’ Council. As athletes, we play a key role in shaping the future of our sport. I am committed to working with my colleagues and IBSA leadership to ensure equal opportunities for all athletes to develop and succeed,” said Sela Odhiambo.
Mads Baulund, a member of the IBSA Executive Board, commented: “This is an important step in strengthening the representation of athletes. I am confident that under Sela Odhiambo’s leadership, the IBSA Athletes’ Council will continue its work, focusing on the interests of athletes and their equal involvement in decision-making. We are ready to support initiatives aimed at developing the sport and creating better conditions for all athletes.”
Iida Kauppila served as the first chairperson in the history of the IBSA Athletes’ Council, having been elected during the IBSA World Games in Birmingham. As chairperson, she maintained close contact with the IBSA Executive Board, effectively representing the athletes’ positions. Iida Kauppila now continues her work as a member of the IBSA Athletes’ Council.
“I wish the IBSA Board all the best for the future and would like to deeply thank you for everything you have taught me. I believe the work being done within IBSA is steering our efforts in the right direction,” said Iida Kauppila.
The role of the IBSA Athletes’ Council is crucial in ensuring that athletes’ voices are heard in decision-making processes. This contributes to creating a more fair and inclusive sporting environment for all athletes. The new Chairperson will work closely with the IBSA Executive Board, representing the interests of athletes and supporting the development of sport for the blind and visually impaired worldwide.
