With the 2014 IBSA Goalball World Championships just behind us, the performance of some athletes has stood out.
The performances of some athletes has stood out so much that some exceptional goalballers have made shortlists for athlete of the month.
Most notable is that of Leomon Silva who has been nominated for the Allianz IPC Athlete of the Month.
Silva was part of the Brazilian mens goalball team that took the World Championship title back to Brazil for the first time.
Silva’s performance was exceptional and he also left the World Championships with the title of highest goal scorer within the male division. He finished with a grand total of 51 goals and made 6 of these goals in the final alone.
To vote for Silva please visit www.paralympic.org before 5pm (Central European Time) on 10 August 2014. Silva is facing some stiff competition with other nominees being medalists from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and other IPC sports having their world championships this last month.
The other outstanding effort is that of Team USA members Asya Miller and Tyler Merren who have made the shortlist in their gender categories for the US Olympic Committee’s athlete of the month. Furthermore the US Women’s Team has also been nominated for team of the month.
If you would like to support Miller, Merren and the US Women’s goalball team then please cast your vote at https://twtpoll.com/t65xk3ldkpzdwks. This is a huge honour for these athletes who have been nominated amongst other elite able bodied and Paralympic athletes.
Miller was the goal scorer for the US team in the gold medal match against Russia which they won 2-0.
Merren also had an outstanding tournament. His consistent play and great shot making played a vital role in assisting the US mens team to a World Championships bronze medal and Rio 2016 qualification.
