Football sight classification opportunities for Rio players

Date: February 9, 2016

Category: Football

The IBSA Football Committee has been working recently to secure sight classification opportunities for blind football players likely to be selected for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The following two options for athletes to undergo ophthalmological classification have now been confirmed:

May 7th – Thessaloniki International Blind Football Tournament 2016, Greece

For more information contact [email protected].

May 30th-31st – International blind football tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

For more information contact [email protected].

Important notice for all countries participating in Football Five-a-Side at Rio 2016

In accordance with the IPC zero classification policy for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, all athletes participating in the Football Five-a-Side competition must hold an international classification prior to the event.

All athletes must be classified at international level before the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games with a ‘Confirmed’ sport class status or a ‘Review’ sport class status with a review date after 31 December 2016. Athletes who do not meet these criteria will be ineligible to compete.

All athletes must also hold a valid IBSA license for 2016. Players without a license will not be eligible to compete.

The two sight classification opportunities mentioned above may be the only options to have Football Five-a-Side athletes classified before Rio 2016, so we encourage all countries taking part in the tournament to make every effort to ensure any players who do not currently meet the classification criteria are classified either in Greece or Brazil.
